The scheme will comprise a mix of retail, offices, hotel, lesure and community uses. Located across the River Thames from Canary Wharf, it is linked to the rest of London by the new Jubilee Line extension.

Southwark has made no decision about its preferred master-developer, however. 'There are weekly changes to developers in the frame,' Thompson admitted.

Southwark Regeneration director Paul Evans said he expects 'substantial investment'. He added: 'We might get a landlord who is there already.'
