Griffin will oversee all aspects of the campaign including the paid advertising, political outreach, coalition building, and grassroots activities for the effort to educate Southern Californians about the quality of life and environmental consequences of Washington Mutual's planned development. Griffin also joins the board of directors as the Vice Chairman. Other members include Albrecht, Reiner and Martin Sheen.

Previously Griffin served as campaign manager for two successful California initiatives--Proposition 10 and No on 28. Under Griffin's leadership, in 1998 Proposition 10 won voter approval despite a more than $40 million campaign waged by the tobacco industry. The initiative placed a 50-cent tax on cigarettes and today raises more than $650 million a year for health and education programs for the state's youngest children. The following year, Griffin again led the campaign against Proposition 28, a tobacco industry attempt to repeal Proposition 10. Proposition 28 was defeated by 72 percent of California voters.

Prior to running campaigns in California, Griffin served in the White House on the staffs of both Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers and later Communications Director Mark Gearan. In these positions, Griffin served as a liaison between the President and the White House press corps and traveled extensively with the President both domestically and internationally. Following his tenure at the White House, Griffin coordinated Democratic and Republican convention activities for Rock the Vote.

Griffin says he looks forward to this new challenge, and will work to ensure that every resident in Southern California and particularly the customers, neighbors and shareholders of Washington Mutual Bank are aware of this environmentally disastrous development. He claims that the Seattle-based bank will soon see that it is in their best interest to abandon this project and help to preserve one of Southern California's last remaining open spaces.
