American Express Financial Services is in the process of moving into the 1.3-million-sf building on Third Avenue South and 10th Street. The new American Express client service center, on which American Express served as its own developer, was completed last month and will be home to more than 3,600 employees once moves are completed.
The building is part of a Downtown Minneapolis campus for American Express Financial Advisors that also includes 1 million sf headquarters building at 707 Marquette Ave., which was built by Opus Corp. based in Minnetonka, MN.
Lin worked with RSP Architects of Minneapolis, which designed the interior of the building. HKS of Dallas designed the service center.
Among the elements of the artwork are:
* A wall of water – cascading in summer down the exterior glass curtain wall and freeze in the winter.
* Indoor and outdoor gardens -- including river birch -- indigenous to Minnesota.
* The curves of the 28-by-55 foot sculpture, the character of a hill, under glass, which also serves as the floor of the winter garden.
"In my artwork, I'm interested in slightly altering one's perception of the landscape," Maya Lin says. "What happens when you take a gentle, rolling hillscape and bring it inside? What we accept and might not notice outdoors -- the slight change in the land -- becomes extraordinary and out of place inside where we expect a floor to be flat."
Maya Lin has created public and private artwork throughout the US, but may be best known for her design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982) in Washington D.C.
