With or without the Palais, however, the climate for doing business is ideal. James Southey of the New Jersey-based Garibaldi Group says: 'Coming from the USA, the business has been fantastic. The combination of European clients and American investors has been incredible. This is exactly the kind of environment in which we want to work.'
Southey was one of 700 people who went to King Sturge's party on Thursday. Held at a villa in the hills above Cannes, King Sturge bought 25 cases of champagne - three more than at last year's party.
Some delegates claim they have been driven out of the Palais by the high cost of tickets. A Reed Midem spokesman said: 'In MIPIM, the Reed Midem Organisation has created and developed the world's largest property trade show providing an international forum for real estate brokers, investors, developers and end-users. After 13 years, it remains the most significant event in the property industry's calendar and offers unrivalled opportunities for generating new business relationships, contacts and ideas for top industry professionals. Over 16,000 delegates from over 60 countries attended MIPIM 2002 confirming its sustained popularity and value for the international real estate community.'
