Duke Energy is looking at several sites to replace its South Bay Power Plant in Chula Vista.

The plant on North River Road west of Douglas Drive is among more than 20 possible sites under consideration by the power company. Duke officials say the company must find a relocation site no later than 2006 to have a plant built by 2009. Duke signed a 10.5-year lease with the Port District of San Diego in April 1999 to operate the South Bay Power Plant.

Chula Vista leaders voted in November to support relocating the plant just south of its current location. The 760-megawatt plant, the larger 941-megawatt Encina Power Plant in Carlsbad and the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station are the only major power plants in the county.
