There’s a major new emphasis on build-to-suit industrial development at San Francisco based AMB Property Corp., and J. Thomas Mercer is the man picked to make it happen. That makes sense. Prior to his AMB gig, which Mercer took in January, he spent three years with Panattoni Development, where he was the partner responsible for Colorado development. In that time, he completed such BTS office projects as a 175,000-sf corporate campus for Raytheon in Aurora and 35,000 feet for Mitre Corp. in Colorado Springs. Prior to his Panattoni years, he managed the ProLogis industrial BTS around the country.

GlobeSt.com: In statements announcing the new strategy, there was a lot of talk about logistics customers. Is AMB a latecomer to that market?

Mercer: Not at all. In fact, AMB is a leader in that area. We’re not limited to logistics users. While our primary focus has been high-throughput distribution facilities, which are typically located near airports, we’re now working with all types of distribution users. The new emphasis is on build-to-suits.
