The value of all construction permits rose to $269.6 million in 2001, up from $194.9 million in 2000. In the commercial and industrial sectors, permit values jumped to $154.3 million at the end of last year from $61.5 million in 2000. Commercial permits climbed to 257 from 2000's 102.
That development helped boost sales tax receipts in a year when other Central Texas treasuries posted decreases. Cedar Park's sales tax receipts rose to $5.3 million in 2001 from $3.9 million in 2000. "People are realizing there's an untapped market out here," Kirk Clennan, executive director of the Cedar Park Development Corp., tells GlobeSt.com.
Several big projects went a long way toward bulking up Cedar Park's numbers. They include the new offices of ETS Lundgren; a new Wal-Mart store and shopping center; and new retail development around Lakeline Mall and Cypress Creek. The retail projects include the Shops at Lakeline, an 87,000-sf center anchored by a 57,000-sf Randall's grocery store. The commercial/industrial permits also included school construction.
Cedar Park, like other communities around Austin, has grown rapidly along with the metro area's expansion. Mainly a bedroom community for Austin, the 30,000-population community is trying to mature into its own identity. An economic development plan is n the works as is a major development that includes a town center. The 400-acre town center is being configured for commercial, retail, multifamily and residential construction as well as park areas.
