Yonkers station, built in 1911, forms the centerpiece of the nine-station project. Yonkers-based Ecco III Enterprises Inc. has landed the construction job for the rail platform, designed by New York-based Consoer Townsend Envirodyne Engineering. Masbeth, NY-based Twin Towers Enterprises will do all additional construction on the Yonkers project, a spokesman for the Governor says.

Three additional Yonkers-area stations--Greystone, Glenwood and Ludlow--as well as Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil, Marble Hill, University Heights and Morris Heights stations in the Bronx are part of the renovation. New elevators will be installed at Morris Heights, Riverdale, Greystone and Glenwood, while those at Yonkers and University Heights will be rehabilitated for handicap access, according to the release.

"It's not enough that we have held the line on fares for suburban commuters for the longest period of time in the history of Metro-North," says Governor Pataki. "The Yonkers project will complement the City's ongoing waterfront redevelopment projects, assist in downtown revitalization efforts, and provide new pedestrian access to the Hudson."

Metro-North president Peter A. Cannito said, "Yonkers Station is now one of the busiest in Metro-North territory. Ridership has grown 17% in the past five years and we expect continued growth as this cooperative renovation effort progresses. We consider our stations to be the front door to the communities we serve."
