In the last few months, Starwood has opened several major new facilities including the 509-room W New York - Times Square, Star wood's W brand's new flagship hotel, and the 1,000-room Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Fla.

The hotelier has another facility scheduled to open in New York City's revitalized Times Square district -- The Westin New York at Times Square, an 863-room facility, which will accommodate its first guests by November of this year.

Other major Starwood hotels/resorts that have opened within the last six months include the 163-room Westin Dublin, the company's first foray into Ireland; the Western Cape Hotel & Spa, a 145-room facility in South Africa; two hotels in Chicago--the W Chicago -City Center (390 rooms), featuring the first W retail store; and, the W Chicago - Lakeshore (556 rooms). Rounding out the recent openings was the 296-room Sheraton Resorts in Phoenix Seagaia, in Miyazaki, Japan (296 rooms) which has become Japan's largest integrated golf & resort complex.

Starwood is on the brink of having a major presence in Shanghai, China, according to Mark Ricci, a Starwood spokesman. The company opened the St. Regis Shanghai last year and is set to open the Westin Shanghai, a 302-room facility in July and the Four Points by Sheraton Pudong in Shanghai, a 312-room hotel by the fourth quarter of 2002.

The 47 hotels that either have opened or are now under construction are in the pipeline for openings this year or in 2003. Not included are hotels/resorts that the company has planned for openings in 2004, 2005 and beyond, Ricci added.

Starwood reports that it plans to open a number of new hotels in the next few months including: under the St. Regis/Luxury Collection banner: The Rayavadee in Krabi Thailand, which will consist of 100 villas; the Mardavall Resort & Spa, a 140-room hotel in Palma de Mallorca, Spain will open its doors in June and the Hotel Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa, a 120-room facility in Bora Bora, French Polynesia that is set to open this July.

In addition to the Westin New York at Times Square and Westin Shanghai, the Westin chain has several openings in the next few months: The Westin Miyako in Japan (516-rooms) will open in April; the 404-room Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport will open its doors in November as will the 750-room Westin Kierland Resort in Phoenix. Several Sheraton-flagged hotels will open this year including the 500-room Sheraton Wild Horse Pass in Gila River, Arizona and the Four Points by Sheraton Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt this October. That facility will feature 240 rooms.
