Its competitors could be considered to be other natural food stores such as the Nature's chain owned by Wild Oats Corp. Its closest competitor is the Fred Meyer store at 20th and West Burnside.

The grocery store is one of the largest in the Whole Foods chain, which now totals 129 locations. Another 20 stores are in development of similar size. Including storage and administrative space, Whole Foods leases 43,000 sf.

Air conditioning for the Portland store is being provided by Portland Energy Solutions, which is 90% finished installing the first phase of a massive chilled water air conditioning plant atop the 218,000-sf mixed-use building in which the grocery store resides. At full build out, the $15 million plant will be capable of supplanting air conditioning units in six million sf of commercial space at the north end of Downtown.

Mayor Vera Katz and Bob Gerding officiated ceremonies Wednesday morning. Whole Foods' Ron Megahan, president of the Northern Pacific Region, and Steve Papegaay, Portland store team also were in attendance.
