Webb Could Change Direction of Hotel Deal

DENVER-Bruce Berger needs a fourth extension on his plan to build a Hyatt Regency on his site at 14th and California streets, across from the Colorado Convention Center. He has run into additional competition and difficulty obtaining financing.

DENVER-Mayor Wellington Webb could decide as early as today whether to allow the Bruce Berger/Hyatt Regency deal move forward on an 1,100-room hotel across the street from the planned $268-million expansion of the Colorado Convention Center. The Berger hotel deal expires at the end of the month, unless the city grants him his fourth extension.

Berger and Hyatt are asking for a 45-day extension. If, at a future date, if Berger cannot perform or will not perform, Hyatt says it will take over as the landowner, developer and owner of the hotel, as well as the operator.

Berger owns the full block at 14th and California streets across from the convention center. But another option is for the city to own a convention center hotel itself.
