In addition, it will receive another $3.5 million from the county's 0.2% open sales tax.

It will take years to secure development rights on all of the land, experts estimate.

Under the program, farmers retain title to their land the right to continue to grow crops and raise animals on it. But they can never sell it for development.

The land includes large blocks east of DIA that include the Kiowa, Wolf and Comanche creeks, which preservationists consider important wildlife habitats.
