The college used $7.5 million from the bond issue to cover the August 2001 purchase of the law school building at 3475 Plymouth Road.

The American Bar Association requires that a law school have a permanent – not leased -- facility to obtain full accreditation. Before the purchase, the law school leased the building from the foundation. The remainder of the bond proceeds was used to repay the foundation for facility renovation and furnishings.

The college recently completed a full-scale renovation of the 84,000-sf building, with a library, meeting rooms, a chapel, a moot court, administrative offices, and offices for student organizations. The facility is completely wired for Internet access with a high-speed, T-1 line enabling students to access the Internet from every seat in every classroom and throughout the library.

Francis Cardinal George of the Archdiocese of Chicago, delivered an address discussing the complex and sometimes conflicting relationship between culture and law. His address also touched upon issues facing society including racial injustice, human cloning, the rights of the unborn, and the legal recognition of same-sex relationships.
