Meredith Baumann, spokesperson for the BRA, tells GlobeSt.com that the project is in keeping with city Mayor Thomas M. Menino's call to universities to develop additional housing for their students and take the pressure off the current housing market.
"This is good news," notes Baumann. "We've impressed upon universities the importance of housing their students. This is a step in the right direction." This new building, coupled with the university's existing dorms will house up to 50% of Suffolk's current demand for student beds. The city is dealing with a shortage of affordable housing units and Menino has stated that his administration has made it a priority to focus on the issue.
