The change will mean EP has to sell off its substantial landholdings in the English New Towns like Milton Keynes, which it inherited from the old Commission for the New Towns. In some towns EP still has planning powers, but these will be handed over--along with the land--to the local authorities.

Lord Falconer said: 'EP has an essential role to play in continuing the regeneration of England. Under the guidance of their new Chair, Margaret Ford, English Partnerships will refocus their efforts to identify strategic brownfield land, and oversee its development.'

Margaret Ford is 44 years old and is a former Executive Director of Scottish Homes, the national housing agency in Scotland. She will be paid £43,581 ($62,000) per annum for two days' work per week.
