The Menomonee Falls, Wis.-chain has been looking at locations close to stores run by such rivals as Target and its subsidiary, Mervyn's. Kohl's has already announced plans to open a large distribution center in the city of San Bernardino in the Inland Empire.
Kohl's stores will average 86,500 sf and be a combination of both upscale and discount store merchandise. The chain specializes in apparel, home goods and some electronics. Kohl's has 394 stores in 29 states and plans to have about 420 stores in 32 states by the end of next month.
In San Diego County, Kohl's is reportedly considering Grossmont Center in La Mesa as a site.Kohl's expects to open its first outlets in the county in mid-2004, according to brokers.
Retail analysts say Kohl's will be formidable competition for other retailers, with a focus on good brands at moderate prices.
