The hospital is spending a total of $200 million with the projects announced Tuesday and the $100 million worth of work under way. When the projects are completed in three years, St. David's will have expanded its emergency room capacity by 40%, in-patient capacity by 20% and outpatient capacity by 50% to 60%. The hospital's expansion is called the CARE Initiative.
The growing demand for health-care services requires such a large expansion, Jon Foster, St. David's president and CEO, said in announcing the projects. "The improvements and expansion we are undertaking will prepare us for the unprecedented increases we're seeing in health-care needs and demands on facilities," he said.
The demand for health care comes from the baby boomers, an increase in uninsured patients and the general growth of the Austin-area population. St. David's HealthCare Partnership operates four of the area's largest hospitals: St. David's Medical Center, North Austin Medical Center, Round Rock Medical Center and South Austin Hospital. The partnership has more than 5,000 employees and generates gross revenues of $1.2 billion a year.
The new expansion spending will be concentrated on the South Austin Hospital and the Round Rock Medical Center. About $50 million will go into the South Austin facility at 901 W. Ben White Blvd. to increase its size by 100,000 sf and renovate about 26,160 sf. It currently has 210,000 sf. The work will increase emergency room facilities, add surgical beds and cardiovascular operating rooms as well as re-orient several functions to increase efficiency. A hospitals spokeswoman says the hospital is at capacity and needs more space "just to handle the people walking in now."
The partnership will spend $25 million to add 26,618 sf to the 160,000-sf Round Rock Medical Center and renovate 12,559 sf. The medical center, located along RM 620 west of Interstate 35, will get expanded and renovated surgery, intensive care and outpatient facilities.
About $24 million will be spent on clinical equipment in the second project round. Work under way or completed includes expansions at St. David's Medical Center at 32nd Street and I-35; North Austin Medical Center at 12221 N. MoPac Blvd.; Bailey Square Medical Center at 1111 W. 34th St.; and Surgicare of South Austin at 4307 James Casey St.
