The report from F.W. Dodge, a division of McGraw-Hill, covers nonresidential construction such as commercial, manufacturing, educational, religious, administrative, recreational, hotel and dormitory buildings. Counties included are Travis, Williamson, Bastrop and Caldwell.

Despite the February surge, 2002, now nearing the end of the first quarter, is behind the totals for 2001. For the first two months of 2002, the value of construction contracts was $160.6 million in comparison to more than $200 million in 2001.

February's residential construction contracts were down 15% to $130.2 million from $152.7 million in 2001. Residential contracts include one- and two-family houses and apartment buildings.
