The project involves an 889,000-sf, 1,483-bed dormitory, a 1000-car underground parking garage, and a 570,000-sf arena and recreation center. It will be located right next to the university's playing fields on land acquired y the university. According to Meredith Baumann, spokesperson for the Boston Redevelopment Authority, the project is large enough to require the city's Article 80 review process.
Baumann notes that the project is in keeping with local university's responsibility to house their students. The city is facing an affordable housing crisis and city Mayor Thomas M. Menino has called upon universities to help ease the crunch by developing campus housing.
