National Instruments Expands Here and Abroad

AUSTIN-Its first foray outside Austin takes National Instruments to Debrecen, Hungary, where a 140,000-sf plant has just opened. The firm also is making plans for an August move into another 380,000 sf on its 169-acre Austin campus.

AUSTIN-National Instruments Inc., a homegrown Austin company, has opened its first overseas manufacturing operation in Debrecen, Hungary. Actually, the 140,000-sf facility is the company’s first outside Austin. The company also is wrapping up a 380,000-sf building in its North Austin campus.

Debrecen offered incentives for National Instruments to put the plant in the Eastern Hungarian city, but other factors were just as important, a company spokeswoman says. Kathleen Fisher tells GlobeSt.com that National Instruments was attracted by the city’s proximity to its European customers, an educated work force, financial benefits of operating in a European city and the ability to diversify its manufacturing operations.National Instruments, which develops hardware and software for test and measurement, gets 50% of its revenue from overseas customers.

The Debrecen plant has 100 local workers and plans to double that number by the end of 2002. The manufacturing facility produces computer circuit boards that perform various measurement and automation tasks, from the research laboratory to the manufacturing floor.
