"Our goal in renovating and expanding Burke Centre Shopping Center was to revitalize the shopping environment to meet the needs of the community, as well as the retail merchants," JBG vice president Alex Ross explains. "With the new tenant mix and the new look, the center is exactly what we envisioned--a clean, spacious, welcoming shopping destination."

Grocery store anchor Safeway benefited from the expansion, adding an additional 14,000 sf to its original 42,000-sf space, and Kohl's is expected to open its new 72,500-sf location later this year in a space that formerly belonged to Hechinger. Other new tenants include Virginia ABC store, Starbucks, and TJ Barber shop. Those outlets will join existing tenants such as CVS/Pharmacy First Union Bank, and Video Warehouse. Burke Centre received $16.5 million in permanent financing through First Union Capital Markets Group in 1998.
