Pentagon renovation authorities solicited bids for the project in June of last year and settled on Turner's proposal, which was one of three under consideration. Kensington, MD's The Bell Company and Barclay White/Coakley Williams Construction of Gaithersburg, MD were the other two bidders. The new facility will replace the more than half-century-old current fitness area that offers only 70,000 sf of space. It will house a swimming pool, basketball and racquetball courts, as well as a cardiovascular equipment area.
"It's in design right now, it's a design-build project," Turner business development manager Jeff Burnham tells GlobeSt.com. "We're teamed with [architectural firm] HNTB on this and we think they've come up with a really interesting design." Speaking about the bid process Turner's project manager Greg Stortstrom adds, "this is on the cutting-edge, in terms of procurement and personally, I enjoy the challenge." The pentagon has a preliminary schedule of activity set in place. "We have a date of June 1 to start demolition, but we are looking to be ahead of that," Stortstrom says.
