The contract with the previous architects, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, was not renewed. Some state officials have expressed a fear for the structure's historic preservation as a reason for severing the relationship but credited HHPA with good work overall.

NBBJ, which helped design Safeco Field, will be paid $7.4 million, including $400,000 to make changes to plans provided by the previous architects. Hired in June 2000, HHPA was paid $2.1 million for the work it completed in September on the project's first segment.

The architectural firm switch is not expected to alter the project's timeline or budget. Completion is slated for October 2004 and will allow state lawmakers to return to the domed Capitol for its January 2005 session.
