The Roxie Cinema, which is located at 3117 16th Street, first opened its doors in 1912. The current owner, Bill Banning took over in 1976. Last week, the building's owner, David Abecassis, ordered Banning to pay rent or quit, after Banning failed to pay rent for four months. Banning responded with an extension request to the city that would prolong the eviction for 21 days.

Banning plans to form a "Save the Roxie" fund and initiate a shift to nonprofit status, which would allow it to continue operations. The eviction notice was served during a construction project, which was funded by a city grant, to add a second screen to the theater. Banning hoped that the second screen would bring in enough money to keep up with the bills.
