A total of $8.7 billion was approved, including $1.1 billion in projects in the Governor's Traffic Congestion Relief Program, $3.6 billion for the State Transportation Improvement Program and $4 billion for the State Highway Operation and Protection Program.
Within the governor's program, $717 million was granted to fund the BART extension from Fremont to Warm Springs in Southern Alameda County and from Warm Springs to Downtown San Jose and the Mineta San Jose International Airport. The airport and local businesses have been requesting this service for several years.
Another $19.5 million was allocated for track improvements that will allow more Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains to operate between Oakland and San Jose.
The Capitol Corridor line, which provides service between Auburn and San Jose, is the fastest growing inter-city train service in the nation, according to Caltrans.
