A ragtag group of around 100 union supporters, family organizations and other community activists attempted to enter the County Superior Court Building, located on 110 N. Grand Ave., in the Downtown section of Los Angeles, they were stopped on the steps by the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. The demonstrators then proceeded to disrupt the courthouse with a mock trail. But before "Judge E. Victor" could speak, the Los Angeles Police Department cut the protestor's power supply.

The rally continued on the steps with a message of protest broadcast through a distorted megaphone before authorities made the activists move to a shady corner besides the courthouse. An orderly but mainly emotional demonstration was delivered, with a group of disgruntled tenants paraded on stage to air their complaints about unfair housing practices.

The meat of the protest was delivered through literature passed out during the rally. The problem, according to Acorn, is that 42% of California households are renting at market-high prices and vacancy rates between 2% and 4%. Worse, Acorn cites that many California families are living in unsafe conditions, but are afraid to complain and risk eviction or a rent raised in retaliation.

The organization goes on to say that renters can be evicted, including mass eviction of an entire building or neighborhood, on only 30-days notice. In Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Santa Monica, a 60-day notice is required when a tenant has lived in the unit for a year or more. Another issue is the high price for security deposits and the inability to retain this deposit in a timely fashion.

In reaction to this lack of protection, Acorn is lobbying two bills into law are SB 1403 (Keuhl), which states that tenants be given 60-days notice when forced to move through no fault of their own. The other bill is AB 2330 (Migden), which is an anti-harassment of tenants and security deposit reform.
