At the time the traffic exemptions law was passed, members of the Bellevue City Council were trying to make it easier for developers to renovate existing shopping centers. Rather than halt development, improve traffic flow by widening the streets or make other improvements, the council agreed to loosen the standards, in certain instances.
The lawsuit against the city's exemptions was brought by members of FAIR--Fiscal Accountability InvolvingResidents. Also Joining in the court action was the East Bellevue Community Council.
The hearings board has ordered city officials to repeal its traffic exemptions law by June 19. The city has the option of asking the hearings board to reconsider its ruling.
