AFTON, MN-The Metropolitan Council recently discussed rural growth objectives with residents of this small rural community on the edge of the Twin Cities metropolitan area — the last such meeting before developing a set of rural policies that will eventually that be incorporated into the agency’s plan for regional growth strategy. The policy meetings are part of an effort to develop stronger tools for protecting agricultural areas, create more flexible approaches to protect rural character and identify important natural resources while planning growth.

The policies will be incorporated into the agency’s metro planning outlook for the year2030. Rather than continuing to view land rural property and farm land as underused land waiting to be developed, metro planning officials hope to come up with a way toprotect it from urban sprawl.
