Now, city officials think they've found the right tenant to beef up the shopping complex – Supremo Foodmart, based in Plainfield, NJ is looking to take over the spot. Under a proposal now before the city council, Supremo would buy out the current owner, the Eagle Group, for $150,000 and would pay back taxes owed to the city by Eagle, estimated to be $170,000. Several years ago, the city had acquired the complex from a previous owner for $1 million, subsequently selling it to Eagle for $1.
Supremo, which operates supermarkets in several urban locations in New Jersey, would expand the anchor building to more than 30,000 sf for the supermarket and change the name of the shopping center to Westside Plaza, according to company officials. A handful of existing tenants, including a pharmacy and dry cleaner, would be relocated elsewhere in the complex to make room for the expansion.
