While initial reports had the explosion taking place in a residential building, one source says the building is actually a 10-story commercial loft dominated by internet and publishing companies. The building is next door to the Apex Technical Institute, originally thought to be the site of the blast.

There is some speculation that the explosion was the result of a construction accident or a malfunctioning boiler, and no claims of terrorism have been reported.

Some 100 firefighters are reportedly on the scene, although no fire has broken out.

GlobeSt.com will report on any new developments in the story.
