The Pleasanton, CA-based grocery and drug store company is taking a close look at Albertsons Inc.'s former locations in San Antonio. The 20 properties offer Safeway a ready-made entry into the market that Albertsons left to locally based H-E-B and Wal-Mart super centers.
Albertsons and Safeway are mum about any negotiations, which they are carrying on directly with each other.
Safeway has aggressively expanded in recent years. Its most recent acquisition was February 2001 when it bought Genuardi's Family Markets Inc., a 39-store chain operating in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. Safeway bought Randall's in September 1999.
Safeway's store footprints would easily fit into the Albertsons buildings, which range from 45,000 sf to 62,000 sf. Safeway's versions require 52,000 sf to 55,000 sf. "Either would fit nicely with an Albertsons site," a San Antonio retail broker tells GlobeSt.com.
