Potrero Power Plant May Expand

SAN FRANCISCO-Despite environmental concerns, the 360-megawatt Potrero Power Plant may soon expand to a 540-megawatt plant. The expansion of the property, which is located ay 1201 Illinois St., will be discussed at a meeting this week.

SAN FRANCISCO-The California Energy Commission will hold a meeting in San Francisco this week to identify key issues on the proposed expansion of the Potrero Power Plant.

Many people are concerned over the new plant’s Bay-water cooling system, which will be that of the National Marine Fisheries Service, whose representatives say a letter earlier this month to the CEC suggested that Mirant Corp. should resubmit its plans using a less harmful, land-based approach.

Mirant spokesman Patrick Dorinson has countered that the complete facts will not be available until the CEC holds evidentiary hearings in May, at which point the company will be able to present testimony from its own experts to counter preliminary findings.
