The city held a grand opening this weekend for the centerpiece of the project, a nearly 15,000-sf Sav-on Drugs. The gathering drew city officials, developers, store owners and residents.

Sav-on is expected to boost sales tax revenue in the cash-strapped city as a result of the $7 million redevelopment project. Using a Craftsman architectural style, the Imperial Beach Promenade fits in with the city's classic California theme.

As part of the redevelopment deal, the city contributed $650,000 in land and other assistance to Sterling Development, the project's developer.
