A company official said Whole Foods would be a good fit for the city. "Toronto is a very sophisticated, ethnically diverse market," said Walter Robb, Whole Foods executive vice president of operations.
The opening follows last week's announcement that Whole Foods plans to build an 80,000-sf store in downtown Austin, next to an existing 38,000-sf store. It also will lease 170,000 sf of a 200,000-sf office building adjoining the store.
The Toronto store is more in line with the company's current store sizes. It is situated in Hazelton Lanes, a mixed-use development in Toronto's Yorkville section. Completed in 1977, the development has specialty shops, studio office space and terraced apartments.
Whole Foods' stock price has been on a tear recently, reaching a 52-week high of $48.29 Monday. The company reports its quarterly financial results May 8.
