Gov. Davis Okays Early Transfer of 767 Acres

MONTEREY, CA-The U.S. Army will divide the former Fort Ord Army Base in Monterey County to California State University at Monterey Bay, the University of California Monterey Bay Education Center, the Fort Ord Reuse Authority, Monterey Salinas Transit and the American Youth Hostel.

MONTEREY-Gov. Gray Davis has agreed to an early transfer of 767 acres at the former Fort Ord Army Base in Monterey County that will benefit several Central Coast education and housing organizations.

Under the agreement, the U.S. Army will transfer the land to California State University at Monterey Bay, the University of California Monterey Bay Education Center, the Fort Ord Reuse Authority, Monterey Salinas Transit and the American Youth Hostel.

“The sooner we get this property back in use, the faster the community benefits,” Davis says.”By adding to the educational facilities already in place on the former Army base and providing additional housing, the property can again be productive for Peninsula citizens.”
