Interstate Power & Light Building $400M Facility

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA-The Alliant Energy subsidiary looked at other developers before picking itself to build the 500-megawatt facility, part of a $1-billion expansion plan. A site and financing are still to be set.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA-Interstate Power and Light Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alliant Energy, says it would build the first generation facility in the company’s Power Iowa program. After exhaustively reviewing bids submitted by other developers, the company decided to build the $400-million, 500-megawatt natural-gas-fired facility itself.

While no site has been finalized, the Cerro Gordo and Buchanan County areas are the leading sites because they are close to both transmission lines and gas pipelines.

“We are working with officials and landowners in these areas to determine if they would be willing to host the new facility that will bring millions of dollars to the local economy,” says Interstate Power and Light Co. president Eliot Protsch. He says winning support of the “host community” would play a key role in making a final site determination.
