OAKLAND, CA-Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the former Wearever cookware manufacturing plant, which is being turned into housing.

Built in 1924 by the Aluminum Cooking Utensil Company of America to house a plant for its line of Wearever products, the building located on the Oakland-Emeryville border was sold to the Flecto Co., the Verathane manufacturing company, in the 1970s.

Flecto abandoned the building at 1001 46th St. two years ago. The new project will transform the building into a residential condominium with 79 townhouse and loft units, ranging in size from 800 to 2,100 square feet.
