The research center will be led by Harvard Medical School professor, Dr. Mark Fishman, and will employ 400 people at the outset with a planned expansion to 900 scientists. The company says it chose the location to be near "top scientific talent, leading academic institutions and a hospital network."

Novartis is planning an eventual expansion of the site in hope of "creating one of the most important research campuses in the world, focusing on the discovery of new drugs for diabetes, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases, using integrated high-throughput technologies."

Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-MA, terms the new research center "the largest centralized research facility in the world" and notes that its location here testifies to the area's reputation as the "epicenter of the biotech world."
