Single-family construction contributed 14,335 new units and two-family units added another 342 bringing the total number of new units in the region in 2001 to 20,064.

Washtenaw and Wayne Counties were the only counties to see overall increases in their residential construction activity, with 15.8% and 5.3% gains, respectively.

Macomb and Canton Townships continue to outpace the rest of the region in residential construction, remaining one and two on the top 10 list for the fifth straight year.

Commerce Township makes its first appearance on the top 10 list at No. 3. The complete top 10 list for combined single- and multifamily unit construction, is:

* Macomb Township (Macomb County; 1,269 new units).

* Canton Township (Wayne County; 1,138 new units).

* Commerce Township (Oakland County; 639 new units).

Van Buren Township (Wayne County; 522 new units).

* Waterford Township (Oakland County; 506 new units).

* Chesterfield Township (Macomb County; 499 new units).

* Sterling Heights (Macomb County; 485 new units).

* Brownstown Township (Wayne County; 477 new units).

* Ypsilanti Township (Washtenaw County; 474 new units).

* Shelby Township (Macomb County; 422 new units).
