Soaring Multifamily Construction in Region

DETROIT-Multifamily rental and condominium building soared 25% last year, while single-family construction dropped slightly. The 5,387 multifamily units in the region were exceeded only by the 1990 total.

DETROIT-Construction of new multifamily housing rose 25% from 2000, while single-family construction dropped 16%, according to the annual report, just released by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. There were a total of 5,387 multifamily units authorized in the region, the second-highest number since 1990.

Single-family construction contributed 14,335 new units and two-family units added another 342 bringing the total number of new units in the region in 2001 to 20,064.

Washtenaw and Wayne Counties were the only counties to see overall increases in their residential construction activity, with 15.8% and 5.3% gains, respectively.
