Puerto Rico will be operating the 1,000-bed medium-security Guayama Correctional Center after June 30. The government took over management of the Ponce Adult Correctional Facility and the Ponce Young Adult Correctional Facility May 4.

Corrections Corp. officials were not told why their contracts were terminated. The Guyama contract had been extended in fourth quarter 2001 to fourth quarter 2006. The contracts may be cancelled at any time without cause.

Corrections Corp. calls itself the nation's largest owner/operator of privately developed correctional and detention facilities. The company operates 60 complexes totaling 59,000 beds in 21 states and Washington, DC. Corrections Corp. owns 36 of the facilities.
