Under the agreement, the hotel will pay the city $1 million over 15 years in exchange for public improvements related to expansion plans for the famous 30-acre site. Since Destination Development Corp., a subsidiary of Lowe Enterprises, acquired the hotel in 1997, the two side have tried to forge an agreementDestination Development wants to build new guest cottages, a convention center and new pedestrian access.
Some residents have complained about the expansion plans because of their impact on views, possible encroachment on their property and parking woes. In response, hotel planners have scaled back the size of cottages between Orange and Isabella avenues and made adjustments to the project's traffic flow.
