A rehearsal and recital hall, the center's fourth, will be added to the building, increasing its cost to $110 million from $89 million and delaying the opening to fall 2005 from fall 2004. The new hall brings the center's size to 281,600 sf.

Rusty Tally, chairman of the group responsible for the center, said a rehearsal and recital was critically needed. "Of course it makes much more sense from a cost-effective standpoint to add it now rather than later," he said.

The group, Arts Center Stage, also said the economy was partially responsible for the delay. "Because of the economy, we wanted to raise all the money up front rather than get bank financing," Michelle Wallace, the center's contact, tells GlobeSt.com.

Arts Center Stage is the nonprofit group charged with transforming the city of Austin's Palmer Auditorium into the new arts facility. The Joe and Teresa Lozano Long Center, named for its biggest benefactors, will be the home of Austin's performing arts groups such as the Austin Symphony, Ballet Austin and Austin Lyric Opera.

David Fleming, president and CEO for Arts Center Stage, said the center's planning has been on schedule. Preliminary work will begin in the summer, with major work starting about a year from now.

Total pledges now number $61 million, Tally said. New phases of the capital campaign have begun with $1 million from an individual who wants to remain anonymous and $500,000 from a corporation that will be identified later.
