St. Joe and Publix wouldn't disclose construction details for the site at the northwest corner of Capital Circle (State Road 319) and Blair Stone Road. But area construction industry estimators tell GlobeSt.com on condition of anonymity the typical Publix store goes up at about $50 per sf. Publix has 697 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

Construction is scheduled to start in the fall with completion by fall 2003. Publix will dominate the 63,000-sf SouthWood Village being developed by Arvida, a St. Joe company. Billionaire philanthropist Arthur Vining Davis founded Arvida 40 years ago.

Publix is owned/operated by its 120,500 employees. The company had 2001 sales of $15.3 billion. Tallahassee is 250 miles northwest of Downtown Orlando.
