The money is part of a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The rail extension will add four new stations and extend travel on BART by nearly 70,000 trips by 2010 The federal grant will be used for the construction of a project between Colma, the airport and Millbrae, which began in 1998. This phase of the project will cost an estimated $1.5 billion and will expand the system, which is currently 95 miles long, to 103 miles.
Since BART opened for revenue service in 1972, the San Francisco Airport Access Project report has recommended linking BART to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Today, the BART-SFO Extension Project aims to realize that vision.
