The $110-million project, under way for two years, doubles the convention center's exhibition pace from 411,000 sf to 881,400 sf. Its footprint covers six city blocks. The expansion adds two exhibition halls totaling 120,125 sf, an upper level ballroom of 43,300 sf and 18 additional meeting rooms totaling 27,918 sf. The expansion increases exhibit space to 246,097 contiguous sf in five exhibit halls, two ballrooms and 52 meeting and show rooms with 54,730 sf.

While the Austin center is still not as big as those in Dallas, Houston or San Antonio, it is big enough, officials say, to compete with those centers and others around the country. The bigger convention center helped Austin land the World Congress of Information Technology meeting for 2006. By that time, an 800-room Hilton hotel next to the convention center will have been completed. It is to deliver in 2004.
