The county's rate of unemployment declined 0.1% from March to April, according to a newly published study by the State of California Employment Development Department. The rate dipped from 3.8% in March 2002, when 60,100 people were unemployed, to 3.7% in April 2002, when 58,400 employees were out of work.
Orange County reported a labor force of 1,562,500 people in April and counted 1,504,100 workers as employed. Its rank as number three in the state has remained unchanged from March, which means only two other regions in California have a lower unemployment rate than Orange County. In addition, the county has once again reported a lower level of unemployment than the statewide average. The state's overall unemployment rate is 6.3%, which is nearly three percentage points higher than Orange County's unemployment rate for April.
