Infineon, based in Munich, has selected DuPont as its photomask supplier. DuPont, in turn, will build a photomask production facility in Dresden that will be co-located with the research operation. AMD and Infineon have chip manufacturing operations in Dresden.
DuPont operates photomask production and research facilities in Austin. AMD operates chip-manufacturing plants in Austin. Earlier this year, AMD bypassed Central Texas as the site of a new chip plant in favor of a joint venture facility in Singapore.
Photomasks are used in the chip manufacturing process. They transfer the chip's electrical circuit design onto silicon wafers.
DuPont plans to invest about $155 million over the next five years in the Dresden plant, which is expected to employ 200 at full production.
