According to the Planning Commission, building height limits would jump from 35 feet to somewhere between 55 and 75 feet. That's about five to seven stories taller than what is currently allowed. The area in question involves nine blocks, east of the Fourth and Fifth avenue bridges and west of Columbia Street.
Not surprisingly, community reaction to this particular comprehensive plan amendment is mixed. The state Office of Community Development, Olympia Master Builders and the Olympia Downtown Association are on record as favoring the amendments. The Thurston County League of Women Voters and Friends of the Waterfront oppose the changes.
Other amendments up for consideration, although seemingly less controversial, including downtown parking. The City Council hearing begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Washington Center for the Performing arts, 512 Washington St. For more information, also refer to the city's Web site at www.ci.olympia.wa.us.
