Ikea officials say they hope the renovation will help increase the store's gross revenue from $100 million a year to an annual take of $150 million. Slightly less than a third of the expanded space will be used as a warehouse in a neighboring building abandoned by The Boeing Co. last year.

The Renton store has grown to 330,000 sf, including the addition of 28 showrooms, which along with the existing 50 showrooms, feature individual furniture displays and accessories for various rooms in the house. The store's restaurant also has been enlarged from 196 seats to 370 seats.

About 500 new parking spaces have been added. Female shoppers also should be glad to know the number of women's bathrooms have doubled as well.

The local IKEA store, which was the Swedish retailer's first franchise-owned store in North America, currently ranks among the chain's top 30 stores out of 160 locations in terms of revenues. It is located at 600 S.W. 43rd, just west of Highway 167.
